Cool,m I've seen this type of puppetry in a Chinese movie years ago. Can't remember the name of it, though.;-)
I did props for a play a couple of years ago called Balzac and the Chinese Seamstress and we did puppets like this, it was pretty cool. There is a youtube video on how they made this, really good.
